Chilean poet and diplomat Pablo Neruda (1904 – 1973) is considered one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. His work is intensely personal (especially his love poems), but his life was extremely political. An ardent Communist, Neruda was involved in popular revolts from the Spanish Civil War to the Cuban Revolution; more than one right-wing dictator wanted him dead. When soldiers came to search his home during the U.S.-sponsored military coup in 1973, Neruda reportedly said, "Look around! There's only one thing of danger for you here — poetry."
