Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854 – 1900) was an Irish poet and playwright. He was most famous in his lifetime as an outrageous personality, a socialite and raconteur of biting wit and withering sarcasm. He is still known for his one-liners, seemingly off-the-cuff, but sometimes borrowed. When Wilde’s friend, the American painter James McNeill Whistler, dropped a choice bon mot one night at dinner, Wilde exclaimed that he wished that he had said it. To which Whistler famously replied, "Oh, you will, Oscar, you will."
